Fishing is pretty good with trout and striped bass being the main fish caught. We are still seeing catfish turning up here and there.
The reservoir is currently storing 150,200 acre-feet, 94 percent of its 160,000-acre-foot capacity. Pumping has stopped. Water levels will slowly drop due to evaporation and absorption. The water temperature is between 65 and 67 degrees. We have planted 4,000 pounds of trout over the past month, and expect to plant again this week.
Our water clarity is good.
If you are looking to rent a boat, it is a good idea to call ahead to check current wind conditions at (925) 371-2628 or check online here for weather conditions updated hourly. We continue to see high winds, so please check ahead if you are planning to rent a boat.
Our Free Fishing Clinic will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4 in the Marina from 9 to 11 a.m. This is an informal conversation about fishing at LV, it’s open to novices and experts alike.
TROUT
Trout are being caught in South Cove and Oak Point as well as past the Rock Wall. The baits of choice for shore anglers are garlic-scented PowerBaits, night crawlers or Kastmaster lures. Trout average a pound and a half but range to over 5 lbs. There was a 1000 pound plant on October 19. There will be another plant next week. Light tackle is important for catching trout with 4-6 pound test being plenty. Trout fishing continues to be fair, mostly in the morning or during evening hours with fish being caught from around the reservoir.
LARGEMOUTH BASS
Most anglers were focused on stripers or trout. Keep in mind that largemouth must be 12 inches to be kept. Please release any big largemouth bass you might catch, they are the future of largemouth bass fishing in the reservoir. If you catch any of undersized fish please release them gently and allow them to grow up.
STRIPERS
Striper fishing is mixed with fewer shakers showing up but more medium to large fish being caught. The pier by the Marina and from Oak Point south towards South Cove is doing decently. Striper boils have slowed some but are still being seen here and there. Early morning is the best time to find the boils all around the lake. If you happen across a boil, top water lures are doing a good job catching fish. From shore, cut anchovies or shad is the bait of choice. Just a reminder, stripers need to be 18 inches or more to be legal. Please release the small fish as quickly and carefully as possible. They are the future of our striped bass fishery. A 12.45-pound striper was caught in Penn Cove using a swimbait.
CATFISH
Catfish are still being caught here and there even with the cooling water and mixed weather. For those wishing to target catfish, chicken liver and anchovies are the best choices of bait. A 5.45-pound catfish was caught in Cowboy Cove using an anchovy.
