The water temperature out here at lake Del Valle has been staying in the 50-55-degree range making it the perfect time to fish for trout. Many of our anglers are limiting out using power eggs with the fluorescent white color or the chartreuse orange Micetails. The west beach across from the marina has become the best place to shore fish for trout. If you have a boat the island in the lower narrows as well as the coves out in Swallow bay provide prime trout fishing territory. The small and largemouth bass have gone dormant for the winter with the water being quite cold to catch them anywhere but, you can always work worms or spinners along the bottom if you are determined. The bass out here love to hang out in the structure, so you are going to want to target debris near the shoreline or rocky points for them. The Striped bass are running in between the peninsula about a mile out from the marina and the south end of the lake they are chasing the trout straight out of the water! Larger swimbaits are the best bet to get a striper to charge your bait, trout imitations are the key out here with the stripers feeding on the planters that come from Mt. Lassen, or the Department of Fish and Game. Coldwater catfish are also out feeding in the lake as the rains start to come. Nightcrawlers are going to be the better bait to use because of the earthworms being pushed into the lake from the changing water levels. Although you can always use my personal favorite, anchovies as well. The catfish are going to be found in the shallow water, the West Beach is a great place to catch them from shore. Many anglers are also hooking up with these strong fighting catfish out in the upper narrows along the shorelines. The perch fishing has died off with the drop-in water temperature, they will not be back until Spring.
