So for all the Shaking – Rattling – and Rolling that’s been going on, we haven’t felt a thing at the Lake, but that may also be that we were a bit on the busy side and a bit on the tired side during the evening quake – didn’t even hear or see a rockslide. Our thoughts are with those that are experiencing some worries at this time.

Lots of people enjoyed Independence Day at the Lake whether it was to fish, hike a bit or just cool off. There were many limits seen leaving the Lake and we heard talk of loads of fish caught and released. The Eagles kept early more boaters entertained soaring high overhead.  

Tuesday was the day Department of Fish and WildLife picked to stock the Lakes in the Canyon. Evelyn and Adam Monzor caught a 1-7/8 pounder using a NightCrawler. Ramses Banuelos land a 4 pound Beaut on a Jig with the help of his daughters. Son Evan Root showed Dad Frank how it was done catching a ¾ pounder on a NightCrawler. Luckily, Shaun Redmon using a NightCrawler brought in a 4 pounder in – just enough to feed the Redmon Clan.

Still wondering what to use on our Lake? Try fishing the Inlets (all 3 of them) or around the rock piles. A great way to fish is drifting – meaning go upwind (don’t put your anchor out) turn off the motor, throw out your line and let the wind blow you past the spot you want to fish.

The House Wrens have babies – if you listen carefully you can hear them chirping away, but keep a watchfully eye out – Mama & Papa are zipping in and out keeping them well fed.

The skeeters have made an appearance and with the big winter, be prepared for a pretty epic mosquito season, so don’t forget the bug juice, but remember to try and keep it, your sunscreen and any other Foo-Foo juices off your hands – fish don’t like the taste or smell. It’s also Pine Pollen time – so if you’re susceptible to hay fever allergies – don’t forget the meds.

Trail Conditions

“Things continue to improve quickly for hikers in the Bishop Creek Canyon however conditions are still less than ideal for this late in the season. There was plenty of hiking activity over the holiday week and day hikers were able to make it to Long Lake, Green Lake, Grass Lake without too much snow in the way. Folks obviously hiked to many other areas as well, but crossing snow is still an issue. High flows on creek crossings made it more difficult to reach the Treasure Lakes out of South Lake or Blue Lake out of Sabrina. There remains quite a bit of snow over the 10500ft elevation but it's melting fast. We did get some reports of people coming over Bishop Pass and the going was pretty difficult but doable. Some folks made it without crampons, some people said they wouldn't even try it without them....so take that for what it is. Might error on the side of being over prepared at this point.”

The trail to Blue Lake is passable – a bit of snow here and there and there are a couple of creek crossings.  There’s snow just past Donkey Lake and DiggleBerry Creek is probably flowing pretty high - Be Careful!!!

If you’re planning on hiking – PLEASE BE PREPARED – hike with a buddy – leave a note on where you’re headed – when you’re expected back – what you’re wearing – take plenty of water & food – dress in layers – you’ll start out cool, but will probably warm up – CHECK THE WEATHER! Not only is your life on the line, so are the Search and Rescue Teams. Also, if you meet stock on the trail, please go to the low-side, that way if the mules are startled they’ll go to the high side and not down the canyon.
