Sacramento River shad fishing report.

River releases on the Sacramento River have risen and are at 12,500cfs at the time of this report.  There have been a few great fishing opportunities happening on the Sacramento River this past week.

The lower Sacramento River in downtown Redding California has been a solid choice for both fly and conventional spin fishermen.  Although we have seen some warn Summer days here in the Redding area, the Sacramento River does remain very cold due to the cold water device/curtain at Shasta Dam.  It is not unlikely that the daytime air temperatures rise above 100 degrees and the river water tempertures remain at a cool 54 degrees on the Sacramento River in downtown Redding California.  The wild rainbow trout hold in this streatch of river by the thousands, making a multiple hook day a reality here.  Side drifting small egg colored combinations like the new BNR soft beads is all it takes to hook up on 15 to 18 inch rainbow trout repeatedly.  We experience double, triple and even quadruple hook ups on these wild bows' daily on the lower Sacramento River.

Further to the south we have been enjoying 100 plus shad days and nights on the lower Sacramento River towards Colusa California.  When you find a huge school of American shad and are set up with the right artificial fly and color it is not uncommon to hook schooling shad on every drift during the golden hours.  Early in the mornings and late in the evenings have been best to hook shad one to three pounds on average.  Large female shad are in the mix and tip the scales at three to four plus pounds.  The shad have returned up the Sacramento, American, Yuba and Feather Rivers by the hundreds of thousands this season making for one of the best shad fishing years in recent memory. What a great trip to get a young angler hooked on CATCHING and FISHING!  These American shad are hard fighting and a great sportfish on the Sacramento River during this time of year.  Small brightly colored jigs tipped with the right colored curly tailed grub has been all it takes to enjoy multiple hook ups.

SACRAMENTO RIVER SALMON SEASON UPDATE!

The Sacramento River will be open to a full extended salmon fishing season starting on July 16, 2020.  There will be a daily bag limit of two large adult salmon per person with a possesion limit of four king salmon in possesion.  Another addition worth noting is that the season will remain open beyond the traditional December 16th closing date to December 31, 2020!  This extended opener will be permitted above the Red Bluff Diversion Dam in Red Bluff, California up to the Deschutes Bridge in Anderson California.

Probably one of the biggest announcements to be made about this years salmon fishing regulations is the daily limit increase over on the Feather River.  Anglers will be allowed (3) three king salmon per day through October 31, 2020.
