EAST WALKER RIVER

The East is running at about 117 cfs today, the fishing down there has still been pretty good with lots of good reports coming in from anglers down there. Most of the action has been nymphing, it seems like the dry action hasn’t been as good as a couple weeks ago though the fish are looking up once in a while, mostly in the late evening. The weather has warmed up quite a bit so it’s probably best to not fish during the middle of the day so as not to stress the fish too much, the best times to fish this time of the year are from about 7 to 11 and 5 to 9 or so.

Patterns to try: Rainbow warrior, silver streak, san juan worm, squirmy wormy, micro mayflies, top secret midge, darth baetis, buckskin caddis, LaFontaines deep sparkle pupa, z-wing caddis, Fox’s poopah, elk hair caddis, E/C caddis, parachute adams, sculpzilla, zuddler, moal leech, JJ special, dead drift crayfish.

SCEIRINE RANCH

The Ranch is still fishing well, lots of nice fish in the 14 to 20 inch range being caught down there lately. It’s still been pretty busy with bookings but of course not near as busy as the public sections of the river. They’re still eating some stonefly nymphs down there and the dry/dropper action has also been pretty good still. Like the Cali side we still haven’t had very much news on streamers but they should eat a dead drift crayfish or a sculpzilla once in a while.

HUNEWILL POND

The reports from the pond this week were decent with anglers reporting 3 or 4 fish for a half day some additional missed stikes. Sounds like the leech stripping was the best technique with not too many rises for dries or dry/droppers. Also sounds like it’s going to be good to get out there fairly early in the morning before it warms up too much and the fish seek shelter. Mayers mini leeches, seal buggers, stillwater nymphs and soft hackles have all been producing some nice fish.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR

The reservoir has been a bit tough this past week with anglers reporting from one to 5 or so fish per half day. It seems as though the trolling has probably been the best technique with small Rapalas, needlefish, Thomas Bouyants and crawlers. There are still a lot of pretty good perch being caught, some well over 2 pounds. Most of the trout being caught are rainbows in the 1 to 6 pound range with a few browns here and there up to around 4 pounds. Still haven’t heard much from any fly anglers but I would expect that some fish should be caught on streamers near the inlets or just out from the marina.

KIRMAN LAKE

No new news from Kirman this week.

TWIN LAKES

Like Bridgeport, the Twins have been a little tough for some but we are getting some good reports as well from some anglers. Yesterday we had a 6 and an 8 pounder come in frm Lower Twin as well as a few good stringers bait fishing from the shore up there. Haven’t heard a lot of news from the trollers lately. We’ve had a few good reports from fly anglers stripping leech with dropper rigs and sinking lines, they’ve been getting into some fish up to around 3 or 4 pounds. Successful bait anglers are using pinched crawlers, inflated crawlers, power bait and mice tails, lure anglers are having some success in the mornings and evenings with Thomas bouyants, kastmasters and mini jigs. Flies to try include seal buggers, mini leeches, balanced leeches, soft hackles and zug bugs.

WEST WALKER RIVER

The West has been kicking out some really nice fish again this week upwards of 6 pounds. Anglers are reporting not necessarily catching lots of fish but the fish they are catching are pretty good ones. We’ve also had several reports of some good browns being caught in the 18 to 22 inch range. The great folks up in Walker planted a bunch of 3 to 8 pounders in the river this week and I understand have funding to do the same for at least the next 3 weeks so there will likely keep being some good fish being caught for a while to come. Bait anglers are catching fish with salmon eggs, crawlers and power eggs, lure anglers are using mini jigs, Panther Martins and rooster tails. Fly anglers are using hoppers, ants, elk hair caddis, royal wolf, prince nymphs and copper johns.

VIRGINIA LAKES

The Virginias have been very busy but we are still getting some good reports from up there. It seems the best thing to do is be out on the water in a tube, kayak or row boat, this will help you cover more water and find those fish when they’re away from the shore. Lure anglers are having some success with mini jigs, Kastmasters and Vibrax spinners, bait anglers are catching fish with pinches crawlers, inflated night crawlers and mice tails. Fly anglers are using balanced leeches, buggers, beetles and soft hackles.

If you would like to receive this report via email, drop me a line at [email protected] and I'll get you on the list!

RANDOM INFORMATION:

Bad news from the Department of Fish and Wildlife, there are apparently at least 4 hatchers that supply the Eastern Sierra where the fish have contracted some kind of bacteria that they are so far unable to identify. They are working hard to figure out the problem and get it fixed but unfortunately will not be able to plant any of those fish until the problem is fixed. This is of course going to make fishing in most of the planted waters more difficult as the weeks go on. This is very unfortunate and hopefully the DFW will get things figured out and be able to get to planting fish soon. Seems like a great time to start practising more catch and release so there are fish for everyone to catch out there!!
