Shasta Lake is finally turning the corner on its summer time configuration. There is a warm layer of water 40' thick and the cooler water sits below. Its safe to say we have a solid thermocline as evidenced by the sonar pictures and the steady line of fish below 40'. The surface is starting to thicken with tiny shad, and as they grow, will begin to come together forming into schools. Larger sonar arches are visible, especially before the sun hits the water. Its just a matter of a week or two before these Shasta Lake trout and salmon begin to gorge themselves on the massive amounts of new Shad in the lake. I personally think the fishing gets much easier when all of the above conditions line up. We've been doing pretty well most days and todays trips were average, producing a half dozen nice fish for our clients to take home. Captain Justin got his clients into a nice brown trout and a King salmon. Trolling Trinidad Tackle spoons and Brad's Kokanee Cut Plugs at 40-50' has been taking plenty of nice slmon and trout. Tight lines!
