EAST WALKER RIVER 

The East re-opened 3 or 4 days ago, along with all the other California State property in the area. The water is running about 73 cfs right now. The water is very off color, low visibility into the river right now, this is likely due to the algae and weeds in the Reservoir starting to die off and decay and then get blown through the dam and into the river. This usually takes a few weeks to clear up. Lately the water clarity hasn’t seemed to hurt the fishing much as anglers are still reporting decent catch rates down there. We haven’t heard much about dry flies lately, it’s been mainly small midge patterns and caddis nymphs still. Also haven’t heard much about streamers yet but it might be a good bet to try that out first thing in the morning. Copper johns, zebra midges, radiation baetis, top secret midges, rainbow warrior, silver streak, squirmy wormy, San Juan worm, buckskin caddis, Fox’s poopah, LaFontaines sparkle pupa have all been doing well down there.

SCEIRINE RANCH 

We’ve had some decent reports from the Sceirine this past week as well, again, the water clarity is a slight issue but it hasn’t slowed the fishing down too much. Like the California side, it’s mainly nymphing with soft hackles, pheasant tails, copper johns, San Juan worms, squirmy wormy. We have had a couple anglers still picking up some fish with hopper and hopper/dropper rigs as well on the ranch. There are a lot of reservations on the books right now so try to call ahead if you want some time out there.

HUNEWILL POND 

We had a couple decent reports from the pond this week, the action wasn’t off the hook but there were some nice 14 to 18 inch fish being caught. Most of the action was either with small dry flies or small leeches and soft hackles. As the weather cools things should keep getting better out there, if you want to spend some time on the pond just give us a call and we’ll get you on the calendar.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR 

Bridgeport has started to produce a couple fish here and there, some from the shore and some from boats. There’s definitely not lots of fish being caught but we are starting to see a few again. It sounds like the weeds and algae are starting to die off with the colder water temps and as this progresses the fishing should keep getting better and better. The fish we heard about that were caught from the shore were caught with bait, mice tails, inflated crawlers and pinched crawlers are a good bet. A few fish were caught trolling with crawlers, needlefish and Thomas Bouyants.

KIRMAN LAKE 

Kirman is back open but we have had no reports from up there lately.

TWIN LAKES 

Both the Twins are now back open, the fishing up there has been a little tough but there are definitely some nice fish being caught. There’s been some good fish caught trolling deep with Rapalas and Thomas Bouyants as well as some being caught bait fish both from boats and from shore with power bait, pinched crawlers and mice tails. The fly anglers have been having some success from tubes stripping streamers like wooly buggers, Twin Lakes Specials, as well as some soft hackles and zug bugs.

WEST WALKER RIVER

The West is all back open again, we didn’t have much reports from up there since it all re-opened, the water is pretty low so it would be best to search out the deeper pools and runs where fish might be holding up. Drifting eggs or nymphs would be a good bet in these places as well as running a Panther Martin or Mepps spinner through there.

VIRGINIA LAKES 

The Virginias are also back open, there have been some good days up there as well as some slower days. This past week showed with fish up to nearly 11 pounds, including a 10lb 11oz, 9lb and a bunch in the 5 to 8 pound range as well. Kastmasters were the lure of choice for several anglers who caught some of those bigger fish. There were also some good fish caught on mice tails, mini jigs, power bait and crawlers. Fly anglers did the best with mini leeches, wooly buggers, matukas and soft hackles.

RANDOM INFORMATION:

The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest as well as the California State lands in the area are all back open, the Inyo National Forest remains closed, they are supposed to re-evaluate the Inyo tomorrow and hopefully that will re-open as well. We had some really smoky days here in Bridgeport last week but the last 3 days haven’t been too bad. This of course can change from day to day depending on the winds. Fire restrictions pretty much everywhere are still in effect.
