With the extreme season in Oregon, hunters and anglers should check ahead about possible closures, restrictions and cancellations. We are updating access conditions as we can in the Recreation Report. However, conditions can change quickly, and in between updates.

Best bets for weekend fishing

We’re starting to get into fall fishing at its best. Salmon are moving into the tidewaters, steelhead are navigating the Columbia on their way to eastern Oregon, and cooler water temperatures have reinvigorating trout fishing.

• With last week’s rains, Chinook are starting to move into tidewater on many north and mid-coast streams.
• We’re nearing the peak of the coho run in Eagle Creek and the Clackamas and Sandy rivers, with fish now throughout the rivers. Early returns suggest a banner year for coho.
• Diamond Lake has reopened to fishing, and several anglers have been catching limits of trout.
• Foster and Green Peter reservoirs were heavily stocked this spring, and a good many fish are probably still around. They’ve gotten bigger over the summer months and cooler water temperatures will be putting them on the bite.
• Fishing for yellow perch in Tenmile Lake, Williamson River, Upper Klamath Lake, Crystal Creek and Fourmile Canal should continue to be good to excellent if you can find the schools!
• Trout fishing at the high mountain lakes can be excellent this time of year. The mosquitos are done, and fish are feeding heavily in anticipation of winter. 
• Trout fishing on the Grande Ronde and Wallowa rivers has been good to excellent. This is a great opportunity to get in a little casting practice while you wait for the steelhead to arrive.
