Crowley Lake - Mammoth Lakes, CA (Mono County)

The lake has been ice free for two months and that makes for bigger fish greeting us on Opening Day.
This includes a nice bunch of Browns that the $12k proceeds from last summer's Stillwater Classic added to the lake.
The lake is pretty full, typical for this time of year.

I will meter the lake and gauge bottom temps on Friday so look here that evening for my predictions. One spot that already has my eye is along the northern end of Green Banks where the Owens stream channel was rerouted during last Summer's very low water conditions.
It is far enough from shore the spinning guys won't be able to sling any hardware in your boat or float tube and should have some bigger fish, which are staging for the spawn congregated there.

Midges: Realistic, realistic, realistic, as in dubbed-head, olive and gary/black Optimidges in the clear water. Maybe the flashback version if the fish are deeper than 10 ft.

Streamers: As one of my early mentors put it so succinctly . . . Deep, Dark and Slow!

The Crowley Cam is now at the Fish Camp and ready for your viewing. Click here to see live wind conditions

Guides Hint: This year's Stillwater Classic will be on Saturday, August 8th this year, so circle your calendar and don't miss it or a chance to help the lake! Note: the Double Haul has been pretty much shelved at least for another year.

A six DVD set of last summer's 8-hour Crowley University is now available for those who could not attend. This is a reference library you need to add to your arsenal if you fish the lake. It is a de facto download of everything I've learned in more than 2000 days fishing and guiding the lake. It is being distributed to various shops around the state and available at Trout Fly. Free shipping if you order by phone (800) 637-6912.
