The trout are still hitting well near the dam in the mornings and evenings, and they’re still running surprisingly shallow. Keep in mind that the higher the sun is the deeper the fish are, so in lower light levels keep your slip bobber set between 3 and 6 feet. As the day rolls on drop down between 6 and 12 feet. If you’re trolling that translates to about 1 color of leadcore in the mornings and evenings and 2 to 3 colors throughout the day. Bait and lure selection is still wide open, but sticking to reds, pinks, and coppers is always a good bet, and having night crawlers on hand is a must.
The bass still aren’t quite as eager to chew as the trout are, but they are being caught on finesse techniques here and there. Rock structure, such as that found around the observatory and the dam, is the best place to search for them. Shaky heads and drop shots are your best options, but Texas rigs and Carolina rigs can get the job done as well.
Catfish, carp, and crawfish are all prowling the warmer waters on the east end of the lake and inside the bays, so there’s something on tap for everyone.
Also, we’ve been having a lot of rainy afternoons lately, so if you’re coming from out of town be sure to have some rain gear with you.
