Fishing at Crane Prairie has been decent. Let’s hope that we continue to get rainy weather and average temperatures. It will help to mix the water and cool things down up there. Water temperatures are still really warm, please bring fish in fast and do your best to target fish in the cool channels. Surface action may be better than the past couple of weeks. Wind from storms can knock a lot of terrestrials into the water, so be ready with cubbies, beetles, and ants. Callibaetis are still coming off, I’d expect some really decent hatches right before or after a thunderstorm; however, the hatches die off when the water gets choppy. Nymphing has been consistent with chironomids and balanced leeches. Callibaetis can receive some attention in deeper waters but damsels are mainly in water too warm for trout. It appears that we may be moving into our late summer thunderstorms a bit earlier than usual. Let’s all hope that we receive generous amounts of precipitation and cool temperatures, both to improve fishing and decrease the risk of wildfire.
