The Lower Deschutes has fished decent over the last week. The fishing slowed slightly because the flows were increased to around 5200 CFS. Flows have dropped back down to 4220 CFS which is a much more comfortable level. This week trout fishing should be great. Remember that you cannot target steelhead, check the ODFW emergency regulations for details. Blue wing olives have been coming out right before noon. October caddis can still be seen; however, their numbers are few, a pupa pattern may still get some attention. Nymphing is the way to go for the majority of the day. Stonefly nymphs will always be a staple down there. Eggs have been fishing well and will continue to do so until the end of the whitefish spawn in December. Small baetis nymphs are productive right before the afternoon hatch. There are many other options for nymph patterns, the fish will be eating drifting nymphs, which is often a much more random assortment of bugs than during a hatch. The canyon still has some fall colors to enjoy, it’ll be a great week to head to the Lower Deschutes.
