Fishing has been decent at the Metolius the past two weeks and access has been fairly easy. I would head out there soon, Juneuary doesn’t last forever and winter weather looks to be returning within the next two weeks. Blue wing olive hatches haven’t been super consistent but when they’re hatching the fish are rising. A few of the upcoming warm days could potentially bring out a few October caddis. If they are around there likely won’t be many, try using an October caddis pupa as a searching pattern. Typically, I rig up a large nymph and a smaller dropper nymph on the metolius. Green drakes and stonefly nymphs are excellent large nymphs. Size 14 - 18, pheasant tails, hares ears and copper johns all have the potential to produce some fish, as well as more specific nymph imitations like a caddis rock worm or a slim shady baetis. Euro nymphing is likely the best way to put lots of fish in the net. Make sure your nymphs are getting to the bottom and if you’re not seeing any action after 20+ casts think about switching things up.
Suggested Dries: Purple Haze #14-18, Hackle Stacker Baetis #18-20, Parachute Baetis #16-20.
