Paul Clouse of Lafayette, Al Hurwitz of Saratoga, and Chris Schmidt of San Jose trolled San Pablo Reservoir on 3/17/2022 looking for Rainbow Trout. The fishing was slow for us partly due to some brisk winds which decreased the clarity of the water. The lake is now filled to the brim with a surface water temperature in the 56-57 degree range. We caught three Rainbows ranging in size from 12-19 inches, keeping the biggest two. The largest (pictured below) was caught by Al just North of the entrance to Scow Canyon on the eastern shore. It weighed 4.2 pounds and was 19 inches in length. A very nice fight, especially at the side of the boat! The fish were all caught about 15 feet below the surface in 20-25 foot water columns. They were all hooked using Speedy Shiners, trolling at a speed of 2.2-2.6 mph. Those who are fishing with various form of artificial baits are generally doing better, since scent rather than visual cues is more effective in getting the fish's attention. However, with continued improvement in water clarity, I anticipate that trolling will reach the high level of success we achieved last year.
The marina staff, as always, was extremely helpful in getting us on and off the water.
See you soon. All the best, Dr. Al Hurwitz
