The trout bite in the Upper Kern has been consistent this past week. The warmer days are getting fish more active, and anglers don’t have to hit them on the nose to get a bite. The easy access points are a good place to start since that’s most likely where it’s been stocked. Fish have been coming throughout the 20-mile stretch with salmon eggs, spinners, crickets and minijigs. Fly anglers have had good success with native trout in the Upper section. The Upper kern was stocked this week in all three sections of the Upper Kern to Johnsondale Bridge. In the Lower Kern, trout have slowed a bit, but can be taken with salmon eggs, Get Bent Baits, GULP! pinched crawlers and Garlic doused Powerbait. The Bass action remains steady in the slower pools has with minijigs, Senkos, jigs, and spinners. At the time of reporting, the Upper Kern River was flowing at 506 CFS and the Lower Kern River was flowing at 452 CFS.
