The Upper Deschutes opened on Sunday, May 22. We heard a mix of reports. Some people did well and others did not. We heard it was crowded, as is to be expected on opening weekend. As far as tactics go, a large stonefly nymph with a small dropper mayfly or caddis nymph is the way to go. Fish in the deeper pockets you find and make sure your flies are getting down. Dry-dropper setups can be a blast in the Spring/summer months up there as well. Stripping streamers around the log jams can be dangerous on your flies but effective for targeting some larger fish. The Upper Deschutes is a gorgeous place to spend a spring/summer day so get out there and find some fish.
