Al Hurwitz and Jim Wolfe trolled Los Vaqueros Reservoir on 4/18/24, looking mainly for Rainbow Trout. After a slow start, we were rewarded with a number of bites and four decent Mount Lassen Trout. The first trout, weighing a little over 1 pound was caught in Howden Cove. The remaining three, weighing a bit over 1.6, 1.7, and 2.0 pounds were all caught in East Cove. Pictures of the fish are shown below. All the fish were caught using Rapala Jointed Husky Jerk Hard Baits. The bite really turned on after a one hour of progressive cloud cover beginning around noon time, the fish seeming to prefer the cloudy conditions rather than the bright blue sky conditions. We applied a variety of scents to the lures. Clearly, most of the bites and active fishing today took place in East Cove, and there were a number of fish “hits” on the solar unit there as well. The trout were caught approximately 8 to 10 feet below the surface in 15 to 20 foot water columns.
The water clarity was very good, and the surface water temperature ranged from 60 to 63°.
All in all, a very, very good day following a slow beginning. We will see you soon.
With best regards,
Dr. Al Hurwitz, Saratoga
Dr. Jim Wolfe, Los Altos
