EAST WALKER RIVER
The East is flowing at about 243 cfs right now and is still fishing very well. The nymphing action and dry action has been very good this past week, not hearing much about streamers lately though. The dry action has been the best in the mornings and evenings with caddis dries and a few attractor dries, mostly smaller sizes though you can fish a dry/dropper rig with larger hoppers and chubby’s on top and you’ll likely get a few takes on the larger dries as well. The nymphing has been pretty good most of the day except for maybe from about noon to 4 or so, this has been the hottest part of the day and the fish seem to be a little shy during this time. Some patterns to try: chubby chernobyl, para adams, E/C caddis, elk hair caddis, tailwater tiny, silver streak, rainbow warrior, perdigon, buckskin caddis, Fox’s poopah, LaFontaine’s deep sparkle pupa, San Juan worm, squirmy wormy, worm jig.
Also, some food for thought, in the Fish and Wildlife Departments infinite wisdom they have decided to not make barbless hooks mandatory on the East Walker, this is absolutely going to be detrimental to the life if this amazing river in the future, if you care at all about the East Walker and its sustainability, please pinch your barbs, if everyone adheres to this practice it will help the East Walker River to keep on being a world class fishery. Thanks for your consideration.
SCEIRINE RANCH
The ranch is also still kicking out lots of nice fish lately, in addition to the flies mentioned for the California side you can also fish some stonefly nymphs and have good success. There are quite a few dates booked up for the Sceirine so if you’d like to get on the water down there just give us a call.
HUNEWILL POND
The pond is still fishing ok but the weeds are trying their darndest to take over. There are still decent numbers of fish being caught with leech patterns, soft hackles and the like but the weeds can be a bit of a problem in parts of the pond. I don’t think it’s quite time to quit fishing it altogether but if you do want to fish it you need to be aware that there are weeds to contend with out there. I think that if you fish either dries or small, light leech patterns with no beads you should be able to stay above the weeds and get into some good fish.
BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR
We’re still getting some good trolling reports as well as still fishing reports from the reservoir lately. The trolling has still been producing with Thomas Bouyants, speedy shiners, night crawlers and small Rapalas while the bait fishing from boats has been good with pinched crawlers, inflated night crawlers, power bait and mice tails. The shore fishing has not been very good from what we’re hearing so it’s pretty important to be out in a boat or kayak or tube.
KIRMAN LAKE
We didn’t hear any news from Kirman this week but I feel like it’s still going to be a bit warm up there and it’s probably best to give those fish a rest until later in the season when the water cools down.
TWIN LAKES
The Twins are also still kicking out lots of nice fish, the trolling has been good for both trout and Kokanee with kastmasters, needlefish, Rapalas, night crawlers and wedding rings and the bait fishing has been good with power bait, pinched crawlers, mice tails and inflated crawlers. There has also been some good lure fishing from the shore in the mornings and evenings with mini jigs, Kastmasters and Thomas Bouyants.
WEST WALKER RIVER
The flows on the West have been steadily declining and are now in the 210 to 230cfs range most days. The dry/dropper fishing has gotten better as has the spinner and bait fishing. Bait anglers are using salmon eggs and mini crawlers, lure anglers are using Panther Martins, Mepps and Blue fox spinners. Fly anglers can go with hoppers, chubby’s, copper johns, soft hackles, pheasant tails and hairs ears.
VIRGINIA LAKES
The Virginias are fishing well for most anglers, it sounds like it’s been best to be able to get away from the shore in a tube or kayak but we’re still getting a few decent reports from the shore anglers. For bait it’s been garlic power bait, mice tails, pinched crawlers and for lures it’s been mini jigs, Kastmasters and Thomas Bouyants. Fly anglers can go with wooly buggers, Twin Lakes Specials, mini leeches, soft hackles and pheasant tails.
