In this week's Nevada Wild, Aaron Keller and Bobby Jones sit down with NDOW’s Upland Game Staff Specialist Justin Small to take a deep-dive into the 2024 chukar forecast. Long story short, chukar are thriving in Nevada, and it’s going to be great chukar hunting season this year!

After surveying 59 areas across the state, Game Division biologists report that two good years of precipitation along with an above average number of carry over birds (birds that are 2-3 years of age) have resulted in a literal boom in the chukar population. Some are saying the best in the last 20-30 years!

“Last year we counted 4,966 chukar. This year that number is 10,906. That is almost a 120 percent increase from last year,” said Game biologist Justin Small. “That’s almost unheard of and should make chukar hunters very happy.”

The youth chukar and hungarian partridge hunts are September 28 - October 6 and the statewide season opener is October 12. Start preparing by downloading the Chukar Forecast here.

Thank you for supporting Nevada's wildlife and have fun out there!
