The flows on the Truckee have stabilized after last week’s rain and are currently sitting at 200 CFS around Glenshire, and 400 CFS at Farad. We would consider these flows ideal, being slightly above average for this time of year.

Along the upper river, we are finding good fishing using light nymph setups, with 2 smaller flies, a bit of split shot and a 1/2” to ¾” indicator in white. The average depths here are much shallower, making fishing this section a bit easier than downstream where there is a great abundance of deep buckets.

The dry fly fishing along Glenshire has also been good and provides a seldom had opportunity when fishing on this river. The baetis and midges have been coming off on a near daily basis and are a great alternative to fishing the hatches on the Little Truckee, where the fish are far more pressured and selective. The Canyon section (Hirschdale and east to the state line) has seen a big increase in visibility and the flows have stabilized to right around 400 CFS for a few days now. This will mean that the smaller flies will be the most important this week. While we are still fishing the larger attractor nymphs as our top fly on the indicator set-up, the odds of the fish opting for the smaller offering are far higher with the current conditions.

Without beating a dead horse, we will say that the fly selections you’re using now will be the same you will be using for the next few months. Be sure to have a good selection of stonefly nymphs, worms, and eggs, while using BWO nymphs and midge larvae as your smaller dropper fly. Look for fish to hold in slower areas of the river, such as the deeper buckets, tailouts, bubble lines, etc. These should be at around walking speed. With the cold weather expected this week, the mid-day through afternoon fishing will be the time to get out.
