As is true with most January’s, indicator fishing has been the most effective way to target the LCT. The trout have been moving a lot recently making them a little harder to pin down, and they may not be where you have been fishing the last few weeks, at least not in great numbers. I’ve been targeting beaches with a drop off around 11-14 feet, but we are catching them anywhere from 6-10 feet. I am convinced that the LCT will move feet to get to a fly that they want.

Fly selection hasn’t changed much. Lighter colored leeches have still been the best producer. If you haven’t already, this is about the time of year I start fishing smaller leeches like our mini leech. There has also been some midge action. Red, black, flashy midges will be best until the water warms more and the midges begin to hatch.

Water temps will begin to warm as the days get longer and we have a break in the storms. Look for the midge bite to pick up specially if the surface temps start flirting with the low 50’s.

Flies we suggest for Pyramid Lake: Balanced Leech, Holographic Midge, Micro Holographic Midge, Mini Jig Leech, Mopcorn (check out the new color variant), Pyramid Lake Bugger
