Current Lake Conditions:
Finding cold water is the key to finding aggressively feeding rainbow trout. In the month of August, cold water can be at a premium on waters like the Upper Sacramento, Hat Creek, some lakes and small unnamed streams. Lewiston Lake has cold water in abundance. There are some truly huge rainbows found here. Anglers fishing scud patterns seem to be doing best. Try Hunchback Scuds, Mercer's Gidget, #18-20 Zebra Midges in red or black. Lewiston Lake should be on your August fly fishing list.
The Fly Shop's ? Tips:
You can't go too small. Can you? When using indicators, the takes can be difficult to see and detect, and then the takes can be electric. Successful indicator anglers keep the flies in the water, all the way to the backing, then low and slow retrieve. Sink tip fly lines allow anglers to retrieve leeches and buggers fast or slow. This lake is best fished from a motorized boat, pram or pontoon boat. Float tubes are fine if you are okay with walking back up to the parking lot after the slow current of Lewiston pushes you to the southern end of the lake.
Flies:
Dries:
• Parachute Adams #14-18
• Air Flow Cut Wing Callibaetis
• D&D Cripple Callibaetis
• Fox's Scum Duns
• Black Flying Ant #14
• Carpenter Ant #12
Nymphs:
• Lightening Bugs
• Chromies #18-20
• Sparkle Scuds #14-16
• Hunchback Scuds #16
• Zebra Midges (Any) #18-20
