Current River Conditions:
Good fishing continues to be found on the very upper sections of the Klamath river near Iron Gate Dam. Don't hesitate to fish the waters below Shasta river and Klamath confluence. Good water conditions can be found all the way down towards Humbug Creek Rd. Beyond Humbug expect dirtier, darker water conditions that are not ideal for fishing.
Egg patterns in shrimp pink, Salmon-egg and steelhead orange are reliable patterns and should produce for you all the way through early March. Seems like mid day the salmon-egg yarn works best, shrimp pink in the late afternoon and Orange in the AM hours. #6-8 Pat's Brown Rubber Legs is a good fly to have! Red Copper John's in 12-14 have been working too! For those eggs, Buy yarn here..
The Fly Shop's ? Tips:
The most productive method for getting tight to adult steelhead on this river, in respect to the upper sections near Hornbrook, CA., is suspending nymphs and eggs under an indicator. Use 2x-3x leader and AB or AA split shot. Fish at depth between 5-7 ft. You might consider fishing deeper and heavier the further down stream you venture during winter months.
Fly rods from 6wt to 7wt are perfect in lengths of 9' to 9'.5. Switch rods are popular and make casting very easy. Spey rods fit in well on the Klamath river. Look for steelhead in the pools and shallow tailouts.
