Current River Conditions: No bad reports coming out of the Klamath this week. It has been really, really cold in the AM, warming up nicely mid day. So mid-day offers the best bite. The Klamath should fish great through the coming weeks of February.
Water conditions along the middle to lower Klamath are good and no doubt anglers are finding good fishing along this more remote section of the mighty Klamath.
Good flies to throw this week include Shafer's 3-D, Pat's Rubber Legs, #12-14 Prince Nymphs, Shrimp Pink Micro Spawns and a selection of Boles Bazookas. Red Copper Johns also!
The Fly Shop's?? Tips: The most productive method for getting tight to adult steelhead on this river, in respect to the upper sections near Hornbrook, CA., is suspending nymphs and eggs under an indicator. Use 2x-3x leader and AB or AA split shot. Fish at depth between 5-7 ft. You might consider fishing deeper and heavier the further down stream you venture during winter months.
Fly rods from 6 wt to 7 wt are perfect in lengths of 9' to 9'.5. Switch rods are popular and make casting very easy. Spey rods fit in well on the Klamath river. Look for steelhead in the pools and shallow tailouts.
Road Conditions: No restrictions at this time. Call 1-800.427.7623 for up to date Northern California Road Conditions. Here's a link to Cal-Trans Road Conditions: Click Here.
