Each year, Pine Cove Marina on Lewiston Lake hosts a "Feed the Fish Derby" to help raise funds for the cage culture project. This year the event will be held on July 13th. The project was started by Fish and Game as a way to introduce larger fish into the already healthy fishery. This project begins with obtaining small fingerling rainbow trout from the hatchery at the end of the summer. The fish are then housed in 12x12 pens, which are located at the north end of the dock at the marina, until July when they are released into the open. The derby helps to maintain the cages and to purchase fish food throughout the year.
The annual event starts at 6am with complementary donuts and coffee, you can register early on-line at the website. This is a family friendly event, with the entry fee of $35.00 for adults and for children under 16 only $5.00. Throughout the day we have fly tying demonstrations, local artists and music provided by our own D.J. Coby Harrison. A hot dog lunch is included in the admission price. The day ends with the weigh in at 1 pm. Prizes are awarded for the heaviest fish, second heaviest, and longest fish. We also have a raffle that features many local businesses, such as gift certificates from La Grange, rods and reels, tackle boxes, vests, homemade quilts and baked goods.
For those who are willing to tackle highway 299 either from the coast or over Buckhorn Summit from Redding, Lewiston Lake offers -acres of crystal clear water, with 15 miles of shoreline. The water temperature is a constant 45?? to 50?? which makes it a perfect habitat for rainbow and brown trout. The water level never changes which gives the lake a tree line that is reminiscent of an east coast lake. This is a crowed free zone, with many days showing only one or two boats on the entire lake. If you are looking to get away this is the place to be. It is also a terrific spot to watch bald eagles and other exotic bird life.
Please come out to help support the cage culture project, we would love to help you catch fish by giving you the latest tips on what is working and where to find the big ones. Pine Cove Maria rents patio and fishing boats as well as kayaks and canoes. Bait, beer, soda, ice cream and sundries can be found in the shop. Fly fishermen can come in and purchase locally made flies, with a few that are exclusively made for catching Lewiston Lake trout.
"Fishing Traditions Start Here" is our motto. We pride ourselves in creating an experience for our guests that can bridge generations and help create memories; surrounded by the pristine beauty and serenity that is Lewiston Lake. We genuinely hope you will make time this summer to come and enjoy with us.
