Winter steelhead fishing appears to be picking up in the Sandy as both wild and hatchery steelhead enter the system. This early in the season, expect to find these fish mostly in the lower reaches of the river, including Oxbow Park, which has good bank access. Pay attention to the weather and consider hitting the river after the next major warm rain event.

Anglers can also find bank access to the Sandy River in several areas from Troutdale up to Brightwood. Lewis and Clark Park, Dabney Park, and Dodge Park all offer good spots for bank fishing.

USGS hydrological data for Jan. 14 shows Sandy flows receding to 1,120 cfs, with a gauge reading of 8.80 feet and the water temperature on the Little Sandy at Bull Run still holding at a chilly 39° F.
