Yup, if you heard the rumor about an 8-1/2 pound Rainbow caught at Lake Sabrina over the weekend, it’s NOT a rumor, it’s the truth. David Wylie was dragging a Rapala when the fish struck. Twas quite a fish to see.

David’s big fish wasn’t the only larger fish to come out, yes it was the largest by far, but Scott Brady pulled in a 5 pounder using PowerBait. Steven Kumaqai landed a 3-1/4 Rainbow that would make a nice dinner for a few. Jim Bergschneider with the help of Nathan and Raul Pando caught a 2-1/4 pounder and several others using MiceTails and MiniJigs. A NightCrawler was used to land a 2 pounder for Andre and Vuilleumier. Joe Apodaco, Anthony and Steve Reznik used Salmon Eggs to catch their dinner.

As you can see, multiple items were used to catch the fish this week – NightCrawlers, Salmon Eggs, MiniJigs, MiceTails, and PowerBait – KastMaster, SuperDupers and Phoebes were also used to bring in many limits.

Looks like the House Wrens are just about to be kicked out of the nest – MaMa & PaPa are not feeding them as much and keeping watch for the Chipmunks, Squirrels and Nimrod ready to pounce if one of the babies takes flight.
Boy are the wildflowers blooming – Penstomens, Indian PaintBrush, Columbine, Lilacs and lots of yellow and purple flowers that I have no idea what their names would be. We, also, have beautiful Peach and Purple Iris blooming in the back yard and the grass sure is looking green.

Just an FYI – We have no clue on when the Fall colors will start. With the late Winter and late Spring and late Summer, who knows, we certainly don’t.

The skeeters have made an appearance and with the big winter, be prepared for a pretty epic mosquito season, so don’t forget the bug juice, but remember to try and keep it, your sunscreen and any other Foo-Foo juices off your hands – fish don’t like the taste or smell. It’s also Pine Pollen time – so if you’re susceptible to hay fever allergies – don’t forget the meds.

Fishing etiquette is once again becoming a bit of a problem at the Lake and we don’t like problems. If you come upon someone fishing, please don’t fish right next to them – take a bit of hike farther down and don’t cast over into their spot. Same at the Inlet, there are so many areas to fish on this Lake go find another ‘soon to be’ favorite spot.

Hikers:
This Report is from Jared of Parchers Resort and South Lake Boat Landing:

Trail Conditions
“A much improved week of hiking greeted canyon visitors for the last several days, great news for just about everyone. There is now access to a host of destinations without any special gear including the lower Tyee Lakes, Green Lake, Long Lake, Bull Lake, Lower Lamarck Lake and Grass Lake. Folks can get to the Treasure Lakes, Blue Lake and Upper Lamarck as well but creek crossings and snow coverage are still in issue for some.

We're still not seeing much in the way of thru-hiker traffic over Bishop Pass, but there are a few people that are making it over.

A report from Humphrey's Basin over Piute Pass has it mostly snow still but melting quickly. “

Haven’t heard about the trail conditions in the Sabrina Basin for a while, so if any of you hike up into the Basin, stop by the Store and let us know  the conditions.

If you’re planning on hiking – PLEASE BE PREPARED – hike with a buddy – leave a note on where you’re headed – when you’re expected back – what you’re wearing – take plenty of water & food – dress in layers – you’ll start out cool, but will probably warm up – CHECK THE WEATHER! Not only is your life on the line, so are the Search and Rescue Teams. Also, if you meet stock on the trail, please go to the low-side, that way if the mules are startled they’ll go to the high side and not down the canyon.

Howard (the weather guesser) is saying there is a possibility of some moisture maybe heading our way next week – stay tuned.   Here is the forecast for the week fromwww.weather.gov (enter Aspendell, CA in the search and scroll down to see the temps).
