Water Conditions: Good
This week fall weather has definitely swooped in and we are feeling it. Nighttime temps have dropped below freezing in a lot of areas and daytime temps have been noticeably cooler.
Water temps have dropped precipitously and will be noticeably colder. If you plan on float tubing any of the lakes in "The Loop" make certain you have appropriate layers and warm socks. Weather can change daily at this time of season with some days being colder and windy and some days feeling like an August afternoon.
Fishing Conditions and Hatches:
With the seasonal colder nights and water temperatures dropping, the bigger fish are really on the hunt. NOW is the time to float tube with the big nasty streamers, like big ugly white/grey double bunnies and rabbit strip streamers.
Crowds have not been too bad and there are tons of fish in the lakes. Fall season is a great time to dust off the float tube.
Both midging and streamer stripping techniques are working well. Try midging the outlet and inlet of Silver Lake and near the reeds on the far side of Gull and June.
Recommended Flies:
Dry Flies: Parachute Adams #14-18 Callibaetis mayflies (hatch is waning), Griffiths Gnat #18-20, Mosquito Patterns?Ķthe fish think these are midges rather than mosquitoes!
Nymphs: I would hang a #18 PT or the good ol' #18 black Zebra Midge under and indicator (like Crowley nymphing) from 2 feet under all the way to 10 feet down depending on where the fish are hold ing at the time?Ķkeep adjusting depth. Try this on the inlet and outlet of Silver Lake.
Streamers: White/ Grey or brown Double Bunny stripped slow and deep on Gull and June!!
Leech patterns in brown, black and rust. Denny Rickards Seal Buggers in orange/green.
Guides Hint: Most of the best fishing with the fly rod will be stripping streamers, of course. Don't forget about the 3 most important variables?Ķvary your fishing depth, vary your retrieve and change the flies often. It also helps to be on the MOVE and find the fish!!
