The river continues to fish well, Golden Stones, October Caddis, and an assortment of smaller Stonefly and Mayfly patterns are producing good numbers of nice rainbows. Plenty of Bull Trout are also being caught on nymph rigs, and those who are specifically targeting Bulls with bigger nymphs are probably catching more fish than those throwing streamers. That being said, there are plenty of aggressive fish spread throughout the system, and a big white, olive, or tan streamer will get the job done with some patience. There is some good opportunities to fish dries on the Metolius right now. The best time is typically during the early afternoon BWO hatch. There is a pretty short time window to find fish actively looking towards the surface. Be ready with both adult and emerger patterns to maximize the chances you’ll have what they’re looking for.
Suggested Dries: BWO Hackle Stacker #18 or 20, Purple Haze #18 or 20, Hilda’s Spring Creek BWO #16-20, Tilt wing BWO 18 or 20, Spent Partridge Caddis #18 or 20, Henry’s Fork Caddis Tan #18 or 20, Black stimi #16 or smaller
