The Green Ridge Fire has burned 4,300 acres and is now 85% contained according to the Deschutes National Forest Service. I was in Camp Sherman on Saturday, skies where clear and smoke was hard to spot. The wind was blowing all afternoon and trout were up on PMD’s and tan caddis that were pouring out of the trees and bushes. We found what we thought were Willow flies but after some research I think they were Doroneuria baumanni. The adults were a solid size 6 with thick bodies and a pale yellow-greenish underside. A big Skwalla pattern would have been perfect but a Clarks Stone did the trick just fine.
The bulls are showing up in good numbers on their way to spawn in the upper tributaries. The Kokanee should be on their way as well although I haven’t heard of any above bridge 99 just yet. As the Kokanee get closer fishing is gonna get better and better. I am looking forward to cooler weather and less crowds but for now we are enjoying the last bit of summer and some gorgeous days out on the met.
