Metolius fishing has been great. Still no large hatches of green drakes, but they’ve been showing up in small numbers so have some of those ready to go. Blue winged olives and pale morning duns have produced some good eats, as well as a variety of caddis, typically in the size 12 - 16 range. Fish often key into pupa during caddis emergences, try them under an indicator or swung. For other subsurface patterns, try out BWO, PMD or green drake nymphs, they’re all in the mix. General mayfly nymph patterns are also a great way to go. Don’t forget golden stones either, they can attract some big rainbows and bull trout. This is the time of year that rainbows start keying into specific hatches, so don’t hesitate to switch things around if you aren’t seeing success. Dry fly action, great nymphing and good chances of getting a bully on streamers, it’s a great time to go to the Metolius.
