The Lower Deschutes is really great. The heat got the salmon and stone flies out and about. This may be the week that the hatch begins to taper off. Green drakes are hatching in good numbers, mainly on days that aren’t too hot. Caddis activity is heating up. Pale morning duns and pale evening duns are great mayfly hatches to look for. We typically use PMD patterns to imitate PEDs. For your nymphs, think about caddis pupa, stonefly and mayfly nymphs. This time of the year there are so many different bugs in the drift. General imitations are your friend when you don’t know the exact nymph to put on. Swinging soft hackles and pupa can be an absolute blast, especially with a trout spey rod. Get out to the lower for what may be the last of the salmon flies till next year.
