The Metolius has been fishing well. The cool waters are resilient to the high temperatures; however, the hatches are definitely still affected. Fishing is best in the mornings and evenings. If you’re fishing during the warmest part of the day, make sure to release fish quickly so they aren’t too stressed. Dry fly action is best in the evening, morning has some potential as well. Caddis and pale morning duns are the predominant hatches. Golden stones can be found in the upper portions of the river. Terrestrials can work well as a searching pattern. Nymphing has been productive with golden stones, caddis pupa and mayfly nymphs. The pupa are generally size 14 - 18, as are the good mayfly nymph patterns. The Grandview fire is close to Sisters. Make sure to check on fire conditions before you head out. Let’s hope for cool temperatures and rain during peak fire season.
