Fishing out on the Crooked River is continuing to get more consistent. This week should continue to fish well with pretty average temperatures and not too much rain. Blue wing olives and midges are essentially the only choices for dry flies. Midges can work well in the mornings and evenings. The BWO hatch has typically started right after 12 o’clock. Having the entire baetis life cycle ready to go is a great idea. Nymphing has been very consistent. Most days, a slim baetis pattern and a small black or red midge are excellent. If that’s not working for you, try out scuds, small stoneflies, a general mayfly nymph, or even a caddis larva. Fish activity should start to decline once temperatures are consistently subfreezing, now is the time to go before the fish really slow down.
