The Lower Deschutes from Trout Creek to the northern Warm Springs boundary opens on April 22nd. Generally the opening day lands pretty close to when the Salmonflies start getting active. We’ve been hearing people expecting the hatch to come a bit early this year. With that being said, having a nice selection of Salmonfly and Golden Stone dries is a good idea. If you aren’t seeing the big bugs out and flying around nymphing stoneflies will be the key to success. A stonefly nymph followed by a small mayfly or caddis imitation is a great way to go. If fish are active on the surface, a dry dropper setup with a chubby chernobyl can be an exciting way to catch some fish. We are very excited for some Spring and Summer fun on the big river.
