Stocking: One thousand pounds of catfish was stocked the week of July 10th. Another 1,000 pounds will go into the lake the week of July 31st. Catfish season will run until mid-October. We’ll stock a total of 8,500 pounds this season.
What’s the Catch? Don’t let the water level fool you into thinking that the fishing isn’t good! There are still plenty of fish to be caught. You just need to be thoughtful about where and how you fish. If you enjoy fresh fish tacos, the panfish bite is on fire right now. Limits (yes limits!) are being caught in Half Moon and Eagle Cove. Reports are they’re biting on a piece of red worm-use a small hook and light test. Anglers are seeing the big bass, but few are biting these days. Smaller bass continue to bite on Senkos and shiners. Anything under 12 inches should be released. It’s the law! It’s a tough task to fish for catfish without a boat right now. Limits are coming in from Shadow and Sentry Cove every weekend. The usual mackerel, chicken liver, and dip baits are doing the trick. If you have to fish from shore, our rangers recommend the end of the t-dock where it’s deeper otherwise you’ll need to look for the drop offs along the shoreline and cast in that direction.
Conditions: The water temperature is a balmy 77 degrees. To reach cooler temps, you’d need to go about 50 feet deep. Summer has arrived! The water draw continues, so there is lots of shoreline to fish. Be aware of shallow structure if you’re in a boat especially around the points. The next new moon is August 16th. The sun is rising at 5:49 a.m. and setting at 7:58 p.m.
