May 2, 2024 San Pablo Reservoir Outing

San Pablo Reservoir - El Sobrante, CA (Contra Costa County)

Lew Haut and Al Hurwitz trolled San Pablo Reservoir extensively on May 2, 2024, looking mainly for Rainbow Trout. The wind came up early in a North-South direction, making boat control and trolling tough. For that reason, we eventually tucked into Scow Canyon which runs in an East-West direction out of the wind, and provided good trolling conditions. We had four strikes (all of them in Scow Canyon), and managed to catch three small Rainbows, each weighing about 3/4-1 pound. The three were caught on 8 cm Jointed Husky Jerk Rapalas flat line trolled some 4-8 feet below the surface. The fourth Rainbow struck hard on a Kastmaster trolled at the back of Scow Canyon about eight feet below the surface. Unfortunately, that Trout jumped and spit out the hook. All of the caught fish were released in good condition.
Pictured here is Lew with one of the Rainbows caught on an 08 (8 cm) Jointed Hot Tiger Husky Jerk Rapala.
The reservoir is full, water clarity good, and the surface water temperature around 66 degrees.
In spite of the smaller Rainbows, a fun day! For now, if the main lake is windy, I suggest that trollers work Scow Canyon where there are plenty of fish and “hits” on the sonar unit.
