The Little Truckee is currently accessible for most vehicles, but we are expecting a couple of inches of snow in town today, which may impede access for a short while. At 200 CFS, the flows here are also above average for this time of year, providing an abundance of good holding water for the fish right now.

The dry fly fishing remains consistent along the upper section of river, with baetis hatches coming off mid-day. They have been around a size 20, and the fish here become hyper selective when it comes to your fly selection. Emergers tend to outfish the adult patterns, and 6x or 7x tippet and long leaders remain an important factor for your success. For nymph fishing, anglers have a lot more options when it comes to sections of the river, with most areas holding fish willing to take a subsurface fly. The same bugs will be in play, with your best bet being baetis nymphs and midge larvae, as well as the trusty worm.

While the fishing conditions out here are very good right now, we must ask you to consider your impact on this fishery when making the choice whether to fish here or not. As most of you know, this is a very popular river, and it sees thousands of anglers a year. Normally at this point in the year, the road out here is covered in snow and becomes inaccessible. But, because of the lack of snow this year, this river is still seeing a lot of pressure. In short, these fish are not getting the break that they may normally receive in the winter.

We feel for the long-term health of the fishery, it is important for anglers to understand how exclusively fishing one body of water, or greater yet, one section of river, may negatively impact the wild fish. It is also important to consider the impact on the surrounding riparian habitat and the experience of other anglers who may not have the opportunity to fish it as often. We always do our best to remain diplomatic about our views on angler impact on river systems, but it is also important for people that may not realize the effect of their own river use to factor in these considerations when choosing where they might fish for the day.
