The Truckee River has fished well in the last few weeks as flows have stabilized after a storm in late December. With clear skies and moderate weather in the forecast, we expect to see good fishing conditions continue. The annual hatch of Blue Winged Olives should begin any day now as we patiently wait.
Nymph fishing has been productive throughout the river with many anglers focusing their efforts on the Nevada side. Fish have been found in the slower water with river temperatures in the high 30’s to mid 40’s.
Pairing an attractor style fly like a Bead Head Squirmy Worm with a small nymph like the Micro Mayfly is a great way to figure out what fish want to eat. One of our favorite ways to fish small flies in the winter is on a drop shot rig. By rigging your split shot below your flies, you can make weight adjustments while still fishing small patterns near the bottom. A bonus of this technique is that you tend to lose fewer flies since the split shot is on the bottom and not the fly.
Flies we suggest on the Truckee River: Squirminator, BH Squirmy Worm, Micro Mayfly, Psycho Mayfly, Galloup Jigged BWO, Hot Butt, Spanish Bullet, Thin Mint Bugger
