The Metolius River is great right now. Fish are starting to key into dry fly hatches right around noon. The large green drake hatches are still about a week and a half away, but small numbers can start coming off the water on any given day. Blue winged olives and pale morning duns start coming off the water right around noon. A size 14 PMD hackle stacker did the trick for me last weekend. There are still some big october caddis around, especially on cooler days. Most of them were around size 8 - 12. Many different caddis were hatching starting around 10, most were size 14 - 18. For nymphs, a green drake and/or a golden stone pattern is a great bet. Caddis pupa are also good, especially if the fish seem to be feeding in the middle of the water column. Mayfly nymph patterns that imitate PMDs or BWOs are also killer, especially right before the hatch picks up. There are plenty of bull trout in the river. Streamers and nymphs have been working with those bad boys.
