Officers from the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), the National Park Service (NPS) and the Arizona Game and Fish Department will hold an operating under the influence (OUI) checkpoint on Lake Mohave this weekend.

NDOW regularly partners with the NPS and Arizona Game and Fish to conduct checkpoints at lakes such as Lake Mohave, which have a large number of boaters and a history of boating accidents that involve alcohol. This year NDOW has seen several alcohol related accidents and a high profile OUI arrest that has reignited concerns over drunken boating.

"We have seen far too many instances of OUI over the past few years, and we want to work to change the culture of drinking on this lake," said Rob Buonamici, chief game warden at NDOW. Many boaters are still unaware that OUI carries similar penalties as driving under the influence (DUI), including jail time and hefty fines. Up to half of all boating accidents are related to alcohol, so boating officials in Nevada are keen to reduce drinking, therefore reducing accidents and fatalities on Nevada's waters.
