Fishing at Crane has been fair. The algae bloom is still prevalent and the water is still warm. This heatwave won’t improve either of these issues. We highly recommend fishing deep in the channels while the reservoir is in this condition. Make sure to release fish quickly so they can return to the cooler waters in the depths. Callibaetis and terrestrials are your best bets for surface action. Chironomids, balanced leeches, dark assassins, and small mayfly patterns have been the most productive nymphs for us. Most of the action with chironomids has been on a size 14 -18 red and black or chromie. Callibaetis nymphs can work as well. Damselfly nymphs, while prominent, are often in areas that are too shallow and warm to support trout. After this heat wave moves through, the forecast is showing below-average temperatures. Hopefully, this is the last heatwave we receive for a long time. An early start to fall would help out the water temperatures on Crane by a lot.
