Fishing on the Lower Deschutes has been good. Be prepared for the heat, today it is supposed to hit 105 in Warm Springs. Given the heat, fight fish fast and release them as quickly as possible. Surface action is most common in the morning and evening. Caddis and pale morning duns are the main hatches. Caddis are mainly size 14 - 18, while the PMDs are size 14-18. Hoppers can work well down there around this time of year. Caddis pupa and soft hackles have been getting some action, either under an indicator or on the swing. Small sculpin patterns on the swing can also be really fun. Nymphing with mayfly nymph patterns, stoneflies, and jigged euro-style nymphs has been great. As mentioned earlier this summer, heat exhaustion and dehydration are no joke. Let’s hope for cooler weather, it will really help our favorite high desert fishing oasis.
Recommended Dries: Hackle Stacker PMD #14-18, Parachute PMD #14-18, Black or Tan Elk Hair Caddis #12-20, X-Caddis #12-20
