The Metolius has been super productive lately, which is typical this time of year. The second green drake hatch is popping off. There are large size 10 - 12 green drakes and the smaller size 12 - 14 lesser green drakes. The micro stonefly hatch is also happening, most are a light olive color, size 18 - 16. Salmon flies and cascades stoneflies (willow flies) can be found here and there. Caddis are still abundant, October caddis likely won’t be out for a bit; however, the pupa are in the drift now. Don’t forget about pale morning duns because they’re still very abundant. Dry fly fishing is really fun right now, but the fish have a lot on the menu so the hatches can be hard to match. Stonefly nymphs in various sizes and colors work great right now. Size 16 - 18 for the micro stoneflies, 6 - 10 for goldens, and 4 - 6 for the large dark stonefly nymphs. Green drake nymphs are great along with smaller mayfly nymphs that imitate PMDs or baetis. Pupa can receive some attention as well. There is plenty of bull trout in the system, nymphing and streamers are working well. Late summer and early fall provide us with amazing fishing on the Metolius, get out there before the hatches taper off in the late fall.
