Great fishing can be found at the Crooked River right now. Forecasts show cool rainy weather for this week. The pale morning dun hatch has been strong, the cool weather may push the hatch closer to midday. Lots of the PMDs have been smaller, around size 18, with cooler weather we may see more size 14s and 16s. We may even see a few blue wing olives on the coolest days. Caddis are good to try when the fish aren’t keyed into the PMDs. Terrestrials are best used as an indicator; however, they still have potential up until the first few freezes. Nymphing has been consistent with the usual patterns. PMD and baetis nymphs are great choices, along with other small mayfly nymph patterns. Midges are a good choice as well. Often times a red size 18 nymph is unstoppable on the Crooked. It seems like fall may be here early this year, which will likely get the fish in the mood to eat.
