The Nehalem gets a unique early component to its fall Chinook run, often referred to as summer Chinook, and fishing for them has been fair to good this season. This past week fishing was good early in the week and slowed a little toward the weekend. The majority of the fish are still being caught upstream of the Hwy 101 crossing, although some are coming out of the Wheeler area. Wild Chinook may be harvested; 1 per day as part of the daily salmon/steelhead bag limit through Sept. 15.
The creel sampler on the Nehalem saw a few hatchery coho out of the bay again this past week. It’s still quite early for the coho run, but there are a few around.
