Crane Prairie has been fishing well. Water temperatures are high but areas 7 feet or deeper are staying cool. The fish are in the channels. Make sure that you have a way to measure water temperatures to avoid fishing water that is too warm for catch and release. Dry fly action is not very consistent, morning and evenings are best. Try callibaetis and terrestrials. Balanced leeches, chironomids and callibaetis are great picks for getting deep. Size 18 seems to be the ticket for callibaetis. Dark assassins are also an excellent nymph to tie on. Damselfly nymphs are still good, but they do best in shallow areas that are too hot at the moment. Balanced damsels can be a good fly for getting deeper. It’s looking like the next week or two may bring some average temperatures to the region. Hopefully we move into a cool and wet weather pattern during peak fire season.
